BDVA Task Forces

Agrifood

Big Data Agriculture

Focus and activities

This Task Force focuses on the potential of Data and Industrial AI in agriculture and in any Bioeconomy sub-sector

Agrifood (or smart farming in the wide sense) is one of the sectors with the highest potential in terms of application of digital technologies, with special focus on IoT and Big Data. It appears as one of the economic sectors that could greatly benefit from the Digital Transformation movement and we see this reflected in the increasing investments on Digital Technologies by the European Commission.

The Task Force Agrifood is instrumental to extend the constituency of BDVA and its knowledge looking at the potential of Data and Industrial AI in agriculture and in general any Bioeconomy sub-sector. It will allow the BDVA community to learn from developments and deployments in Smart Farming and at the same time, will create a channel to collaborate with sectorial players. The voice of farmers is expected to be considered as data is a sensitive issue, helping BDVA to adopt user-centricity approaches in a field where the position of IT players has been the predominant one.

The BDVA Task Force on Agrifood is currently focused on:

  • Generative AI for Agrifood, harnessing cutting-edge AI techniques to address critical challenges in food production, supply chains, and sustainability.
  • Data Space for Agriculture, promoting the development and adoption of federated, sovereign data spaces to support innovation across the agricultural sector.
  • Data interoperability, enabling seamless data sharing and integration across platforms, stakeholders, and domains to unlock the full potential of agri-data.
  • Circularity and sustainability, leveraging data-driven approaches to support regenerative practices, resource efficiency, and climate-smart agriculture.
  • Trustworthy and Explainable AI (XAI), ensuring AI applications in agriculture are transparent, accountable, and reliable.
  • Sustainable AI / Green AI, advancing energy-efficient AI solutions tailored for agricultural use cases.
  • Cognitive Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI), enhancing decision support and usability in agrifood systems through intuitive and intelligent interfaces.

BDVA’s Task Forces meet regularly, discussing the latest updates from the ecosystem, collaborating on publications and organising events. Check out BDVA’s activities and make sure to stay tuned!
